Biographie

Judith Bonte-Friedheim has belonged to American Women's Clubs where ever she has lived: Rome, The Hague, The Netherlands, Berlin and Now Zuerich,(Nairobi did not have one in 1965). She is not a Grandma Moses, but did start painting and sculpting later in life. She has had shows in these cities at the various Clubhouses. In Berlin she participated in group shows with the Berlin-American Club. Here in Zuerich, she exhibited her stone sculptures with other Club artists in the spring of 2006.

For her current show until May 24th, she has chosen a selection of figurative works from her first years of drawing and painting. Some of her recent abstract work has been inspired by verses from the Bible. The use of colorful acrylic washes defines the direction she is now taking.

While in Rome, Judith helped with various AWAR events and served as second vice president in charge of fund raising. She completed a post graduation certificate from the Vatican School of Library Science after which she reorganized the library of the German School of Rome. The German Language Stammtisch which she started in 1985 is still in existence, giving women an opportunity to meet once a month.

Her three children completed their school years in Rome and later graduated from US universities. Two of them completed master's degrees in Europe. Her eight grandchildren rangeing from almost two to 20 years are scattered throughout the world:  Milano, Modesto, CA and London, giving her and her husband of almost 44 years great pleasure and important reasons to travel to splendid places.

Judith learned to sculpt from Shona tribesmen from Zimbabwe during a workshop in Berlin. Through them she has developed a love for serpentine stone, although alabaster and sandstone from Turkey are also found on her working surfaces in front of her home in the Black Forest.
